Food Truck Insurance Tacoma Washington — Frankie Steel Recap

If we recall, Frankie Steel was Pete’s absolute best worker. (Read this post by clicking on Food Truck Insurance Spokane Washington)

He always showed up on time, he was an excellent cook, he was willing to work overtime when others would back off, he didn’t complain. If Pete asked Frankie to jump, he would ask, “how high?”

In other words, Frankie was an ideal employee, his absolute best — with only 1 flaw.

Frankie was addicted to his cell phone, and it had become a problem.  In fact, Frankie had actually hit Pete’s work service truck in his personal vehicle a few months ago as he was pulling out of the lot where Pete’s fleet of 16 food trucks were stored when not in use because he was — you guessed it, texting and driving right out of the parking lot!

Pete didn’t file an insurance claim with Frankie’s company because the damage was minor and he docked Frankie’s paycheck for the next 4 weeks to cover the dent. Pete, like most people didn’t get the dent repaired he just put the cash in his pocket.

The parking lot accident Frankie caused was not the first incident.

Frankie had also been caught several times texting and driving in his Food Truck — In one incident, 21 months ago, Frankie was actually videotaped by a passing car with a self-righteous citizen who promptly turned over the footage to a news station who ran a rather embarrassing broadcast that day shortly after the new ban on texting and driving went into effect.

Pete’s attorney emailed a statement to the news station apologizing for the incident and promising that all workers would go through a rigorous driver’s safety training course.

Pete thought about making an example of Frankie by firing him, but Frankie was his best employee so he reprimanded him instead.

Pete had all drivers take an online drivers safety course, but the public soon forgot about Frankie the texting and driving food truck operator.

These incidents were fresh on Pete’s mind after he spoke with his insurance agent about increasing his coverage so the very next morning as all drivers met for their daily “briefing” before heading out on their routes Pete warned all drivers about obeying the traffic laws including texting and driving.

Pete emphasized the warning by addressing Frankie directly that resulted in laughter from all drivers. Frankie wasn’t mad he was actually very good natured and didn’t easily take offense.

After the meeting concluded all drivers headed to their individual trucks and began prep duties before heading out on their routes.  Pete walked over to Frankie’s truck and warned him one more time about texting and driving.

Frankie promised to not do it but as our story will reveal, he just couldn’t help himself.

Food Truck Insurance Tacoma Washington — The Incident

As Frankie is driving his Food Truck to the scheduled event his cell phone chimes.

Frankie has the latest smart phone that includes many different tones that may be used to identify messages from certain senders — in this case he recognizes a text message from his good friend Melissa!

Frankie grabs his phone which was sitting in the cup holder, takes a quick glance, and as soon as he looks at his phone as he is driving, he remembered a promise he made to his boss no more texting and driving!

Frankie swiftly puts his phone back in the drink holder and notices that he is close to an intersection with a traffic light.

Frankie desperately wants to reply to Melissa but he doesn’t want to do so while driving just in case someone sees him and decides to make another video.

Without looking in his side or rear-view mirrors to see if anyone is behind him, Frankie begins to slow down and stops his food truck at the intersection despite the fact that the light is green so he can respond to Melissa’s text message.

Since Frankie was so focused on his desire to read and respond to his friend Melissa, he did not take note of a tractor trailer right behind him or the other traffic passing him in the right-hand lane.

The truck driver, Al Smith, is already late for his scheduled delivery. In addition, he just got chewed out by dispatch no more than 2 minutes before he came up upon a super slow food truck that is puttering along 10 miles an hour below the posted speed limit.

We will pick up on our road rage incident in our next post.
